Most of us have been worried about Corona.

Apart from social distancing and maintaining hygiene etc, it’s also very important to strengthen our immunity so that if in spite of all precautions we still catch the bug, our immune system will be in the best possible condition to fight it off.

ibOrganic has partnered with Siddarth Goel, who is one of India’s first few Functional Medicine Health Coaches, established Hatha yoga practitioner, teacher & wellness proponent. Siddarth Goel presents a general protocol to prepare yourself for Carona.

Here is a general protocol from Functional Medicine towards this end:

  1. Prioritise and get Proper Sleep. Deprivation reduces immunity. Practice good sleep habits and maintain regular hours.
  2. Moderate Exercise (but not too much) is very effective in boosting immune function.
  3. Be calm – don’t stress. Meditations that relax the nervous system are very good for this.
  4. Don’t do extended fasts.
  5. Eat home cooked healthy food – avoid processed/deep fried/high sugar/maida.
  6. Nutritious Foods Brightly colored veggies and fruits are proven to boost immunity – eat them in plenty and increase raw food proportion. Fermented vegetables are also very good for the immune system.
  7. Avoid alcohol & tobacco.
  8. Stay hydrated (2-3L daily) Energised and Alkaline water is best.
  9. Supplements
    • Vitamin C 2000 mg
    • Vitamin D 5000 iu (if your level is below 50ng/ml) maybe twice a week
    • Vitamin K 100 mg (when having Vitamin D)
    • Vitamin A 3000 iu (only if deficient)
    • Zinc 15 mg (if your level is below 100 ug/dl)
    • Honey 1 tea spoon twice a day
    • Curcumin 500 mg (I am taking a tspn of turmeric, black pepper powder with honey after each meal)

People who need to take added precautions are those with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory issues and people above say 60 years.

It’s Mango Season – Avakai Mango Recipe

Ingredient

  • Cut mango pieces – 3kgs
  • Salt – 500gms
  • Red Chilli Powder – 450gms
  • Mustard Powder- 500gms (sundry n cool well before powdering)
  • Methi – 1 handful
  • Small Kabuli channa – few
  • Garlic – few n optional
  • Gingelly oil – 1kg

Steps

  • Wash n wipe well n keep it in sun for 10 mins
  • Get mango cut into medium pieces with shell n discard the seed as soon as it’s cut to avoid black stains
  • Wipe the pieces with a thin cotton cloth to remove any seed residue.
  • Take a big wide vessel
  • Mix all the powders n grains well n then mix in oil
  • Now add the clean mango pieces
  • Take a wooden stick n mix it all well
  • Transfer to glass jar n add some oil on top
  • Close the lid well n cover with Muslin cloth
  • Check on 5th day for taste
  • And check finally on the 10-15th day for salt n spices and store it well

Whether you use groundnut oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, or any kind of oil for cooking, they are all produced in one of two ways. You might not be able to tell the difference while cooking or while tasting food, but the two distinct methods of production – cold-pressed and hot-pressed end up becoming completely different finished products. 

The first difference between the two types of oil is the way they are made. In cold pressing, oil is extracted at room temperature and the acid value is relatively low, so oil products are obtained after precipitation and filtration. This means that there is no need for any refinement. Hot pressing involves extracting oil at high temperatures, and because the acid value rises significantly, it loses most of its natural quality. therefore hot-pressed oils are refined to make them fit for consumption.

Cold-pressed oil retains most of its natural physiological and chemical properties and most importantly its original taste. Unlike cold-pressed oil, hot pressed oil retains little of its natural composition. The high temperatures not only change the chemical structure of the oil, but in the process, a lot of important substances like vitamin E, sterols, and carotenoids. 

The yield for cold-pressed oils is an average 35% of the total weight of the total oil content, while hot pressing oils yields an average of 45% of the total oil content. When cooking, cold-pressed oils do not foam or silt, while it is possible for hot-pressed oil to undergo these changes while cooking.

From a health perspective, cold-pressed oil is a wise choice. Hot pressed oils undergo oxidization, which can cause complications like cancer and inflammation. Moreover, a lot of healthy compounds are lost from the oils while hot pressing, whereas in cold pressing, all beneficial compounds are retained. Another important factor that makes cold-pressed oils a better choice is that it involves no refinement, unlike hot-pressed oils which are refined to improve taste and acidic content.

Cold-pressed oils retain all their essence, aroma, and nutritional value. Making use of these oils are great for cooking and skincare requirements. They contain zero trans fatty acids and are naturally cholesterol-free.
